"'The people are so beautiful!' That's enough of the colonial tourism"

English

The article named "'The people are so beautiful!' That's enough of the colonial tourism" was written by SE Smith on April 8th, 2014, and was published on a web page that is called The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/international). You can read the article in the following link: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/apr/08/people-beautiful-colonial-tourism-travel.

In it, Smith showed her opinion of some issues about the colonial tourism and the mistreatment towards the native people and their culture. Colonial tourism can be defined as people from colonial countries (like Europe) who travels around the world, who think those people from "poor and savage countries" can't have the opportunity to travel, and those who judge and generalize the "savages and their countries" with double meaning conversations like it is going to be explained in this review.

The article is based on the fact that all ideas, even positive or negative ones, can affect the identity in certain manner. For instance, when people travel, in most of the cases they see natives as an attraction or as a way of entertainment (such as a Disney sideshow) and also, they take a superficial idea, fact or characteristic to generalize a specific culture or country. Travellers talk without knowing, which means that they take the visual part and not the personality, identity or reality of each person. This article is aimed to foreigns, travellers and to all people to reflect and to think before acting, the message it transmits is based on the following quote: "The people are human beings. Not your playthings."

In my opinion, Smith is right in almost all facts she mentioned and described, because I have seen the majority of those issues and in most of the cases, they have happened in Latin America. For example I believe in the case of colonial tourism still present in daily life's facts.

People who travel to other countries or cities, tend to generalize and criticize the society without being aware of their past, culture, economical situation or any other important elements that can affect their lifes and identity. As a result of generalizing, the affected people can be resentful by those type of conversations, when they have no right, reason and justification to talk about them in a manner that can be discriminative (even if they don't know).

Finally, I can state that superficial ideas created by some groups affect the identity, feelings and the self-confidence of a community or single person.
